A blockchain is a form of peer-to-peer network which uses cryptographic hash functions to build an unchangeable, distributed ledger.
Whereas traditional ledgers are generally managed by one central authority (the way a bank is the sole manager of the ledger tracking checking account transactions), blockchains are generally managed by a decentralized network of computers governed by a predefined set of rules (a protocol) to create transparency and security. It is extremely difficult for any one entity to manipulate or falsify the data recorded in a blockchain ledger, as the data would need to be manipulated on all of those computers collectively managing the blockchain.
