Delegation Instructions

Important: Fake URLs impersonating the secure wallets and UIs used to delegate are circulating on the internet. Always confirm you are using the exact sites we link to here:

Before you start

Currently, delegating is available using Ledger Live and a Ledger Nano S or X hardware device, and also by using one of a variety of web-based wallets.

In addition, staking is available using any wallet that interacts with Cosmos command line tools, such as a Ledger wallet or file-based signer. If you need help staking using the Cosmos CLI, use this guide.

To delegate using a Ledger Wallet:

1. Install Cosmos App and Create Account

  1. Ensure your Ledger hardware device is connected to your computer and active
  2. Within Ledger Live select Manager and unlock your Ledger hardware device
  3. Search for the Cosmos App in the catalog and follow the on-screen prompts to install
  4. Select Accounts within Ledger Live and click Add account
  5. Select Cosmos (ATOM) from the list of crypto assets, and follow the on-screen prompts to authorize the account with your Ledger hardware device
  6. Select Add Account

2. Transfer ATOM

  1. Once the Cosmos App is installed, select Receive within Ledger Live

  2. Under Account to credit select the Cosmos account you just created
  3. Copy the public hash code of your Ledger Cosmos account that shows on the screen of Ledger Live. You will need this in Step 7 to transfer your ATOM.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to authorize on your Ledger hardware device
  5. Ensure that the public hash for your account matches that showing on the screen of your Ledger hardware device, and, if so, accept on your Ledger hardware device
  6. Select Done on the confirmation screen
  7. Transfer your ATOM from the exchange/wallet in which it is saved by sending it to the Ledger Cosmos account public hash code that you copied in Step 4.
  8. Your ATOM balance should now show in your Ledger Live Cosmos account. It may take up to 10 minutes to show the balance.

3. Delegate Your ATOM

  1. Select Accounts within Ledger Live and open your Cosmos account
  2. Under Delegation(s) on the Cosmos account dashboard select Earn Rewards
  3. On the pop-up screen, select Continue
  4. On the Validators screen, click in the search box to Search by name or address...

  5. Enter Bison Trails' validator address: cosmosvaloper1crqm3598z6qmyn2kkcl9dz7uqs4qdqnr6s8jdn
  6. To the right of the estimated yield for the Bison Trails validator, enter the amount of ATOM you would like to delegate and click Continue
  7. Confirm that the validator address is correct on the screen of your Ledger hardware device, and, if so, select to confirm
  8. A verification page will show that your delegation is complete

Congratulations! You are now delegating to the Bison Trails validator.

FAQ

Rewards are dependent upon the number of ATOMS currently staked in the protocol. If less than two-thirds of the total atom supply is staked, the annualized inflation increases anywhere from 7-20% until two-thirds of all ATOMS are staked again.

To determine the current reward rate, divide the inflation rate by the staking ratio. You can find those numbers on Mintscan, a Cosmos block explorer.

If a validator doesn't follow protocol rules, Cosmos slashes their bonded tokens as well as the ATOMS delegated to them. ATOMS remain at risk for slashing even during the 21-day unbonding period.

Slashing primarily happens for one of the two reasons outlined below.

  • Double signing: If someone reports on chain A that a validator signed two blocks at the same height on chain A and chain B, the validator will get slashed on chain A.
  • Unavailability: If a validator’s signature has not been included in the last X blocks, the validator will get slashed by a marginal amount proportional to X. If X is above a certain limit Y, then the validator will get unbonded.

Bison Trails takes these risks extremely seriously and have built our infrastructure to protect our customers and minimize slashing risk.

Read more about how we minimize risk, or read our guide about the Cosmos proportional slashing proposal.

Bison Trails charges a percentage service fee on all rewards earned by tokens delegated to our Cosmos validator. The service fee is paid to Bison Trails automatically by the protocol. You can then withdraw your rewards from the protocol directly.
