A hash is the unique "fingerprint" of a data record.
This string of characters is created using a cryptographic hash function; these mathematical functions are complex algorithms capable of transforming a data record of variable length into a data string of fixed length and structure. The same input will always return the same hash. Any change in the input will change the hash. The cryptographic hash is secure and cannot be reverse engineered to determine the original data record.
Hashes are foundational for the security and immutability of a blockchain. Every block header includes the hash of the previous block, creating the chain itself as it provides the information of the specific order data was included in the ledger. Because of the hash, changing or reordering the blocks would be extremely difficult to do and easy to detect.
