A smart contract is a self-executing program on a blockchain that controls and/or documents legal events or actions according to preset terms.
Smart contracts define the rules and penalties of an agreement, and also enforce compliance. The terms of the contract are written directly into the program’s code and, as such, are saved within the blockchain’s distributed network.
Smart contracts may also execute the stipulations of an agreement, such as automatically distributing funds from one party to another, changing the code of a program, or executing a zero-knowledge proof to provide the secure validation of information. In this manner, smart contracts can facilitate calling data from a blockchain, and serve as the business logic for decentralized applications.
