A trustless system is any system in which trust between parties is not required for it to function.
Many blockchains are trustless systems, meaning they ensure all parties in the network are in constant agreement of what the state, or truth, of the blockchain is by using a consensus method to reach agreement in a programmatic and indisputable way.
Trustless systems can also use algorithmic or programmable logic to securely prove the validity of information, or to ensure that no party in the system is able to take advantage of the others, removing the need for any party to trust another in order for the system to function properly. For trustless data systems, information can be verified without needing to trust the party providing it as the information can be mathematically substantiated. Other implementations of trustless systems include identity management protocols where the identity of a party can be verified without the party needing to reveal any personal information, such as by using a Zero‐Knowledge proof to substantiate the information instead.
