A virtual machine (VM) is a virtual environment that runs in an app window on your physical computer ("the host") and acts like a completely separate computer system ("the guest").
The VM allows you to run a different operating system than used by the host, creating a safe environment to test, develop, and deploy software, sometimes called a sandbox. Using a sandbox is particularly helpful when developing smart contracts or applications for blockchain, as it allows developers to run code and execute state transitions without any permanent impact on the chain itself.
One of the most popular blockchain virtual machines is the Ethereum Virtual Machine but many protocols use their own virtual machines to accelerate the ability for developers to work with their network.
